Labiaplasty or vaginal rejuvenation is a surgical procedure designed to correct issues with the labia majora (outer vaginal lips) and the labia minora (inner vaginal lips).

If you experience embarrassment or physical discomfort because of the size or shape of your labia, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Carlos Illich Navarro from Mommy Makeover Tijuana can help with labia reduction surgery, known as labiaplasty.

The decision to undergo labia reduction surgery is a very personal one. The procedure can provide comfort and confidence without sacrificing sexual ability or sensitivity.

There are several reasons why women choose to have labiaplasty performed, and the benefits of the procedure are numerous. These include:

  • Easing emotional discomfort with intimate partners
  • Reducing embarrassment when wearing a bathing suit or form fitting clothes
  • Correcting hygienic problems
  • Minimizing irritation caused by protrusion
  • Improving sexual stimulation by addressing excessive clitoral covering
  • Decreasing discomfort when participating in sports, exercise or other recreational activities

Candidates for Labiaplasty

The only way to truly know whether labia reduction surgery is right for you is to start an online consultation with Dr. Sergio Romero for a confidential consultation. He has helped many women improve the appearance of their vaginal lips and understands what a deeply personal issue it can be for patients.

He will evaluate your condition and overall candidacy for the procedure. He will answer your questions, address your concerns and explain all of your options.

Labiaplasty is a relatively minor procedure, and most healthy adult women are eligible for the surgery. Generally speaking, you may be a good candidate for labiaplasty if you:

  • Feel self-conscious or uncomfortable during sex
  • Experience pain or discomfort during physical activities, such as cycling
  • Don’t wear attire such as swim suits or tight pants because they are too revealing

Labiaplasty Procedure

Labiaplasty can take between one and two hours. Much of this is dependent on the issues being addressed and the current state of your labial tissue.

While procedural steps are similar, each labiaplasty is different. The best way to learn how long your procedure may take is by starting an online consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon.

In preparation for labiaplasty, you will need to cease taking any medications, supplements, or herbs that can thin the blood and encourage bruising.

If you are a smoker, you will need to quit at least six weeks in advance of your procedure to safeguard against infection, poor wound healing, and visible scarring, all of which nicotine can cause.

There will be limitations on what you can eat and drink in the hours leading up to your procedure, along with specific considerations that will need to be made in order to help ensure the most pleasing experience and outcomes.

Labiaplasty is the reduction of the labia minora, the inner portion of the labia, so that it does not hang below the labia majora, the outer portion of the labia. While this condition is benign, it may result in self-consciousness and/or discomfort when you exercise or wear tight-fitting clothes.

There are two techniques used in labiaplasties: the wedge technique and the edge technique.

The wedge technique involves removing a V-shaped “wedge” from both sides of the labia and stitching the edges together. This technique causes the least amount of scar tissue.

For the edge technique, Dr. Sergio Romero will make an incision that removes the outer edge of the inner labia, making the inner labia even with or shorter than the outer labia. This technique creates a cylindrical scar and more scar tissue than the wedge technique.

After your labiaplasty, you should expect swelling and bruising in the area for around 2 weeks. You will not be able to exercise or have intercourse for six weeks. Expect spotting for 3-4 days and will need to wear pads. Most patients return to work after 3-4 days. You will have dissolvable stitches, so there is no need to return to have stitches removed.
